Abstract: An advanced ceramic tool material JX - 2 - I has been developed by means of silicon carbide whisker (SiCwreinforcement and silicon carbide particle (SiCP) dispersion alumina. The material has the advantage of high bending strength and fracture toughness. Compared with the meachanical properties of A (Al2O3 ), AP (Al2O3 /SiCP ), AW (Al2O3/SiCw), JX - l(Al2O3/SiCw ) and JX - 2 - I(Al2O3 /SiCp/SiCw ), it confirms that JX - 2 - I composite has obvious additive effect of both reinforcing and toughening. The reinforcing and toughening mechanisms of JX - 2 - I composite have been studied based on the analysis of thermalexpansion mismatch and the observation of microstcture. Synergistic effects of toughening and Strengthening for JX -2 -I have been researched systematically.

Keywords: advanced ceramic tool, alumina, silicon carbide whisker reinforcing, silicon carbide particle dispersion, synergistic effect
