Abstract: The periect treasures of large scal Jian temmoku wares for tributc towards the end of Northern Song Dynasty have not been found 10 dale. Sevcral sherds have been unearthed succssively in the Jian tcmmoku kiln site sincc uhe laic cightics. Bascd on the ninc samples, this paper sludics their vessel shapes, engraving or slamping method of the characters of Gong Yu" and " Jing Zhan". The chemical composition of bodics and glazes have been de-termined by XRF method and the comparison with those of common Jian temmoku wares has also been made. The mierostructure of bodies and glazes of the samples have been stu- died by means of POM and TEM. It has been pointed out that the following two formation mechanisms of Jian hare’s fur glazes are the same with that of common Jian temmoku wares, one is CAS₂, liquid phase scparation - crystallzation of iron oxide and the other is liquid phase scparation in the glaze melt-crystallization ofiron oxide . This paper cspecially illustrates that the reason why the black glaze and white hare’s fur for tribute, which takes the greenish-black Jian temmoku with the sharp and stright white streaks as the best is due to the surface reflection effect and inner scattering effect of incident rays causcd by the crystallization of CAS₂, on or near thc glaze surface.
