Abstract: The mechanical properties, microstructure and toughening mechanism of the SiC Whisker and platelet Rein-forced AN composites were investigated by means of advanced analytic techniques in this paper. It is shown that theflexural toughness and srength of the composition were improved by SiC whisker and the reinforced mechanism was mainly considered to be the crack deflection and crack bridging. When SiC platelet were mixed into the SiC - AIN composition, the compostion would have the increasing tendency in flexural toughness and the tendency in flexural strength. the toughening mechanism by SiC was mainly considered to be the crack deflection and branching
