Effect of Heat-Treatment Atmosphere on the Properties of AIN/SiCw(Y203-Si02)Composites

Abstract:AIN - SiC whisker composites with Y203, and Si0additives were heat - treated in air and No atmosphere. Theeffect of heat - treatment atmosphere on the properties of composites was studied, and the phase composition, mi-crostruct and grain boundary were analyzed by XRD, EPA, SEM and HEM combined techniques. It is found thatthe mechanical properties of the composites could be improved by the means of oxidizing treatment in air. The flexu-ral strength and toughness of the composites heat - treated in air increased more than in No. When the composition of Y20and Si0approached its eutectic point in Y203 - Si0system, the effect of oxidizing treatment on the flexuralstrength and toughness of the composite was obvious. The mechanical properties and high temperature oxidation re-sistance were improved effectively.
