Abstract: The origin of Chinese porcelain has long been a controversy among scholars at home and abroad. They base their auguments on archaeoiogical research or modern hitech study on the ancient kilns and its process . Taking advantage of other scholars ' studies and combining his own investigations of old kilns and examination of broken porcelain pieces with archaeological study and latest achievements in porcelain science, the author of this paper arrives at the following conclusions : (1) The first porcelain ware known to Chinese history was the celadon made of witrified clay. (2)The evolutio from pottery to porcelain occurred in the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.~220 A.D.), and the real celadon came into being in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25~220 A.D.). (3) Zhejiang Province in East China was the home of celadon. The first celadon was produced in the Xiaoxiantan- Zhangzishan region, Shangyu City, Zhejiang Province.
