Abstract: Tetravalent metal pyrophosphates (MP2O7, M=Ti, Zr, Hf, Ge, Sn, etc.) are a group of widely used inorganic compounds, drawing extensive attention in the scientific communities. In this paper, the preparation methods of MP2O7 materials were summarized with ZrP2O7 as an example. The characteristic optical, thermal and electrical properties of MP2O7 materials were reviewed, and thus their corresponding applications in the fields of luminescent materials, solid electrolytes, low thermal expansion ceramics and high temperature insulating materials were commented. The prospect for their developments was proposed.
Key words: tetravalent metal pyrophosphate; preparation methods; characteristics; applications
