The Enlightenment of Zen Aesthetic Thought on the Design of Traditional Daily Use Ceramics

Abstract: Zen, a traditional Chinese aesthetic extract from Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, is an important manifestation of the spirit,the highest attainment for the philosophy of the mind and the persistent pursuit of Chinese traditional culture. Zen aesthetics that advocates the natural truth, disparages the elaborate embellishment, and upholds the harmony between man and nature has produced a far-reaching impact on daily-use ceramic design. This paper analyzes the designs of daily-use ceramic products to reveal their simplicity of form, beauty of glaze,minimality of decoration, and quietude of spirit in order to provide inspirations for the design of modern daily-use ceramics.
