Abstract: Late Ming Dynasty as an important period in China’s ceramic history witnessed a pattern of development different from those of other dynasties. Commercial ceramic plants broke through the confinements of the government to come to the fore. Among their products, folk art blue and white porcelain wares were most prominent. This paper attempts to analyze the origins and art styles of blue and white decorations on late Ming commercial wares by examining the freehand brushstrokes and motifs of flowers and birds paintings in underglaze blue.
