Abstract: Traditional ceramic figure sculpture inherits the linear language of Chinese painting and forms an artistic feature of “modeling with lines”. The linear language of Chinese painting is taken as the reference system, where its rich connotation is analyzed. Taking ceramic figure sculpture “Guanyin” of He Chaozong, of the Ming Dynasty, as an sample, the concrete embodiment of “modeling with lines” in traditional ceramic figure sculpture was studied, which three aspects can be summarized, i.e., (i) the image modeling based on linear language, (ii) constructing the beauty of form with calligraphy consciousness and (iii) expressing emotions with curve. At the same time, the inspiration of “modeling with lines” of He Chaozong’s porcelain sculpture for the development of contemporary ceramic figure sculpture is analyzed.
