Microscopic Analysis for Toughening Mechanisms in Tib2/Sicw Composites

Abstract: TiB2/SiCw ceramic composites with different Si Cw content were fabricated by hot pressing technique. Substantial improvements in fracture toughness and flexural strength was obtained for the composite compared with the pure TiB2 ceramic . Microscopic analysis by SEM, TEM showed that whisker pullout, bridging and crack deflection simultaneously occurred in the composites while broken. So its toughening mechanisms is the complex one consisting of the three mechanisms.
