Abstract:Waste slag of aluminum factory and Suzhou clay were used as the raw materials to synthesize mullite of different size distribution, to which a spot of cordierite was added as binder, methylcellulose and water was added as additives to prepare top quality mullite refractory. Flexural strength, thermal characteristic, porosity, etc. of the refractory were tested to determine its optimal formula. The results showed: No.1 was the optimal formula, the flexural strengths of the sample after 0,1 and 10 thermal shock cycles were respectively 126.76 kgf/cm2, 81.07 kgf/cm2 and 45.07 kgf/cm2. The flexural strength retention after 1 and 10 thermal shock quench cycles were 49.24% and 36.52% respectively. The porosity after 10 thermal shock cycles was 40.37%, and the water absorption and bulk density after under no thermal shock were 24.76% and 1.61g/cm3.
