Abstract:The word "context" comes from English writing, which refers to the relevant constraints of the communicative situation which influence a discourse. When used in architecture, "context" requires an architectural work be installed in harmony with its environment and keep a record of the urban history. "Stones from other hills can be used to polish jade." Both architecture and environmental ceramics belong to public art. There must be many similarities between them. In this paper, discussions on design of ceramics in public space are made with considerations to the historical context and the existing urban landscape, with the intention to provide some theoretical help for Chinese environmental ceramic art design which is still in the exploratory phase.

Keywords:context, urban context, environmental ceramics
