Abstract: In the paper, the celadon glaze coloration mechanism of Southern Song Guan Ware is studied from glaze color hue and glaze color saturation. Glaze color hue is determined by the location of dominant wavelength, while glaze color saturatioJJ. by incentive purity. The ccladon glaze color hue of Southcrn Song Guan Ware is analyzcd and studicd by way of Mossbauer spectroscopy, spectrophotometer, CIE chromaticity chart and ligand field theory. The influence of firing temperature and glaze thickness on glaze color saturation is also studied. The major conclusions are as follows:
(1)The ccladon glaze color of Southern Song Guan Ware is mainly controlled by the d - d transition of the sixflod coordination (Fe2+oct)and the charge transfer spcctrue of Fe3+ ions. The former's location of absorption band is along 1000nm (infrared absorption), and the latter's is along 230nm (ultraviolet absorption). They together detcrminc the visible absorption band of the ccladon glaze
(2)The study shows that controlling the ratio of Fe2+oct/ Fe3+ is the key to control the ccladon glaze color hue of Southern Song Guan Ware Whcn the ratio of Fe2+oct/ Fe3+ increases, the dominant wavelength shifts to shorter wavelength. Otherwise, it shifts to longer wavelength.
(3) The study also shows that the ccladon glaze color saturation of Southrn Song Guan Ware increases with the increase of firing temperature and glaze thickness.
