Abstract:The development of ultrahigh temperature ceramics (UHTCs) has been impeded due to oxidation failure. The oxidation mechanism and oxidation resistance of refractory borides and carbides were reviewed in this paper. The Amorphous scale on the borides surface can inhibit the diffusion of oxygen. But the scale will lose its protection if the temperature is too high. For refractory carbides, the protections come from oxycarbide interlayer (MeCxOy). So far most research has not demonstrated that the oxidation resistance of the refractory borides and carbides is excellent above 2000℃. Finally, the future trends of the oxidation resistance of UHTCs are indicated.

Keywords:ultrahigh temperature ceramics, oxidation resistance, refractory borides, refractory carbides
