Abstract: A  process based on sol-gel technique had been used to deposit alumina membranes on different substrates. The results show that α-Al2O3 ceramic substrate with porosity 46.8% and most probable pore size of several millimeters has  better adaptability performance of combination with Al2O3-SiO2-TiO2-ZrO2 composite membranes of 1~2μm thickness and nanometer pore size in this study. The effect of shaping pressure of the substrates and pore size of ceramic substrates and the stress between membrane and substrate on properties of Al2O3-SiO2-TiO2-ZrO2 composite membranes   are  important. High thermal stability and excellent chemical stability and relative hardness of 6~7 of membrane are found by  elementary tests of combination intensity between membrane and substrate.
