Abstract: Gel -casting is a near -net -shape forming technology for ceramics, which was presented first by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (USA) .The novel process have been widely used to fabricate complex ceramic parts due to high green strength, less organic binder( 2-4wt %) and simple control process .In the present paper, some new progress of the gel -casting application are reviewed, mainly including followings :( 1) surface -exfoliation phenomenon of green body gel -cast in air is eliminated viaadding soluble polymer, not using nitrogen protection .( 2) Gel -casting technology can be used to produce refractory and other ceramics with coarse particle size ( 10μm ~ 1000μm) and wide distribution as start materials, such as silicon nitride bonded silicon carbide and recrystallized sillicon carbide .( 3)A novel named “gel -tape -casting”process was developed through combination of the gel -casting and traditional tape -casting, and various ceramic substrate or green tape with thickness of 0 .1mm ~ 1 .0mm were obtained .

Key words: gel -casting, ceramics, refractory, substrate
