Abstract:Founded in 1910, China Ceramic School is one of the earliest ceramic vocational schools in China. This paper investigates the circumstances around its emergence, including the “New Policies” in late Qing Dynasty, the flourishing of overseas study programs, the precarious situation of the handmade ceramic industry, and the need to burst the technical constraints of this traditional industry. It reveals the inevitability of school is a result of the effort to expand education for building up the country’s industry.
