Abstract: Alumina membrane substrate can be used for preparing the modified membrane with some high performances, such as high separation efficiency and high ion rejection rate. The apparent porosity and permeation flux of alumina membrane substrate has an important effect on the above-mentioned performances of the modified membrane. Therefore, the substrate with the stable apparent porosity and permeation flux must be used for the preparation of superior performance membrane. Alumina substrates were prepared by the dry pressing method, using alumina particles with the grain size of 1.6 μm as the main material and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as an additive. The influences of the pressure, the sintering temperature and the amount of PVA on the apparent porosity and permeation flux of the substrates were studied.

Key words: membrane substrate; dry pressing; preparation process; apparent porosity; permeation flux
