Abstract: The fracture toughness of biomimetic laminated ZrB2-SiC ultra-high temperature ceramics can be improved greatly due to its unique layered structure. This structure makes the material quasi-plastic by changing its fracture behavior from brittle to secondary and even multiple-stepped cleavage, remarkably different from the catastrophic fracture of monolithic ZrB2 ceramics. This paper introduces the design principle, preparing technique and current status of the biomimetic ZrB2-SiC ultra-high temperature ceramics. It also points out the developing direction of this material in future.
