Abstract:Non-oxide ceramics such as Si3N4, SiC and their composites are prospective as the hot structural parts of gas turbines. One main problem preventing silicon-based non-oxide ceramics from real application in gas turbines is the corrosion process, especially the reaction with the water vapor generated Si(OH)4 which leads to the performance degradation. The solution for this problem is the use of environmental barrier coatings. The purpose of this paper is to review the development history of environmental barrier coatings, introduce the characteristics of environmental barrier coating materials and the performance of different systems, and finally highlight the further development of environment barrier coatings.
