Abstract: Co:MgAl2O4 is an important high-efficiency saturable absorber for 1.5 μm “eye-safe” laser passive Q-switching. High purity and uniformity Co:MgAl2O4 nanopowder was prepared using inverse-titration co-precipitation method. The effects of process parameters such as precipitant and metal ion solution on the composition and morphology of Co:MgAl2O4 nanopowder were studied. The results show that the Co:MgAl2O4 nanopowder can be obtained, using the mixed solution of ammonium carbonate and ammonia as the precipitant. The morphology of the nanopowder is affected by the concentration ratio of metal ions and the calcination temperature. Obtained by calculation based on the SEM images and BET method, the specific surface area of the particles reached 36 m2/g and the primary particle size was 39 nm.
Key words: Co:MgAl2O4 ceramic; saturable absorber; nanopowder
