Abstract:Titanium boride based ceramic matrix composites were firstly made by eutectic method from either the mixture of TiB2, SiC and flake graphite, or that of TiB2, TiC, SiC and flake graphite. Results show that different phases distributed uniformly in these composites, and the graphite phases in the composites were highly ordered. The d002 values of the graphite in the composites were 0.3385 nm and 0.3367 nm, and the Lc values were 60.8 nm and 46.7 nm, respectively. Boron was already doped into the carbon net, as indicated by the Raman analysis. Some amount of pores existed in the composites, with the porosity of 12.5% and 13.8%, respectively. Also, thermal conductivity coefficients of the composites were 41.0 W/(m·K) and 52.9 W/(m·K). Eutectic method could be a promising method for making titanium boride based ceramic matrix composites.
