Abstract: The nacre-like composites containing hexagonal Al2O3 platelets and organic phase were prepared. Their structure and properties were studied. They had the same “brick-mortar” structure as the natural nacre at the macro level, showing no catastrophic fracture but energy dissipation mechanisms for toughening including crack deflection, delamination, interlock of tablets and tablets pull-out. The low-velocity impact tests showed that the nacre-like composites could withstand the impact energy below 6 J.
Key words: nacre-like composite; “brick-mortar” structure; hexagonal Al2O3 platelets; toughening; low-velocity impact
