Abstract: The influence of Fe2O3 and CaO impurities on the content and structure of cordierite material synthesized from kaolin tailings- aluminium - nickel slag sludge was discussed. Through XRD and SEM tests, the results showed that the impurities (Fe2O3 and CaO)promote the formation of the liquid phase so that the glass body and the crystal are fused together to form a compact sintered body. Fe2O3 was conducive to the formation of cordierite, and the content of cordierite was up to 80% with 0.8%-1.4% Fe2O3 content. With the increase of CaO to 4.2%, the content of cordierite was up to 86%. The results showed that Fe2O3 impurity had little effect on the cordierite crystal structure. The CaO had strong influence on the cordierite crystal structure, which was changed from hexagonal crystal system to tetragonal system, when the content of CaO was up to 3.9%.

Key words: kaolin tailing; aluminum factory waste slag; nickel slag; cordierite; impurity
