“Chinese Porcelain” as the Communication Medium of Religious Culture

Abstract:“Chinese porcelain” on the Silk Road assumed a unique and important role in the “cultural cycle” in the 16th century due to itshardness and wear-resistance, as well as its three other attributes – utility, commerciality and artistry. Chinese porcelain products, with theirunique shapes, patterns and paintings, convey people's religious beliefs and ideas in different countries, and thus become the communicationmedia of religious culture. Among them, the export porcelain products that combine Chinese and Western elements not only carry the spreadhistory of Western religious thoughts, but also are the emissary of Chinese religion and folk belief to the West. Therefore, this communication is a repeated process between Eastern and Western cultures, on a reciprocal basis.
