Abstract: TiN/TiCN composite powders were prepared through carbonitridization with titanium and starch powders. The effects of temperature on the phase and chemical bond compositions of the products were studied by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The microstructure of the composite powders was observed by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Oxidation resistance of the products was analyzed by using thermo-gravimetric instrument. It is showed that the contents of intermediate products (TiO2, Ti3O5 and TiO0.34N0.74) were gradually decreased as the temperature was increased from 1350 ℃ to 1500 ℃. The shift of the diffraction peak to high angle indicated that the proportion of TiN in the TiN/TiCN composite powders was increased gradually. The initial oxidation temperature of the TiN/TiCN composite powders synthesized at 1500 ℃ was 570 ℃, which was higher than those of TiC and TiN powders.
