Abstract: Layer-by-layer method was used to fabricate chitosan-graphene-ammonium polyphosphate (CS-Gs-APP) coating on cotton, using chitosan-graphene solution as positive electrolyte and ammonium polyphosphate as negative electrolyte. Vertical combustion was used to evaluate the flame retardant properties of cotton with CS-Gs-APP coating. Scanning Electro Microscope was used to investigate the morphologies of CS-Gs-APP coatings and char layers. It has been proved that the CS-Gs-APP coatings have good compatibility with cotton, which brings about adsorption of CS-Gs-APP coating on cotton. Moreover, the CS-Gs-APP coating was converted into continuous and compact char layer after vertical combustion test. With the layers number increase of CS-Gs-APP coating, the after-flame time decreased. When both the concentrations of CS-Gs solution and APP solution were 1wt.%, CS-Gs-APP coating with 15 layers exhibited best flame retardant properties.
