Abstract: The elastic modulus of ceramic coating plays an important role in the glaze-body fitting, and the accurate evaluation of the elastic modulus of ceramic coating is of great significance for the design of material composition and structure and the analysis of internal stress. In this study, the analytical relationship among the moduli of the coating, the substrate, and the coating/substrate system was derived based on the relative method. Also the method for measuring the elastic modulus of the coating using the impulse excitation technology (IET) was proposed. The IET and the three-point bending test by relative method were used to evaluate the elastic modulus of the glaze layer respectively, and the accuracy and reliability of the new method by IET was confirmed by the comparison of the testing results. The elastic modulus of the outer layer of the glazed tile is higher than that of the inner layer because of its denser structure.
