Abstract: The Noted Porcelains of Successive Dynasties with Comments and Illustrations by Hsiang Yuan-Pien offers a systematic introduction to Chinese porcelains for westerners and is the first Chinese-and-English-note porcelain document compiled by Guo Baochang and Fu Kaisen, two great antique researchers during the Republic of China, who collaborated and made a considerable investment of time and money in publishing the book. Since its publication, the book has been highly praised in porcelain society at home and aboard, earning the reputation ‒ “the first rare book in the Republic of China”. However, no researches have been attempted to reveal the reasons behind. The aim of this article was to prove that it deserves the reputation by analyzing the motivation of its publication, the publication process and its influence.
Key words: Guo Baochang; atlas of famous ceramic works; rare book
