Abstract: Reaction bonding method can decrease the cost of β-SiAlON production due to the use of cheap Si raw material. During the process, the liquid phase can promote the formation of β-SiAlON phase, which helps improve the mass transmission. Sintered at 1700 ℃, the reaction bonded samples with or without sintering additives exhibited single β-SiAlON phase. During the high temperature sintering, the selfdiffusion of Al2O3 also improved, which promotes the formation of β-SiAlON. On the other hand, the formation of AlN also contributes to the formation of β-SiAlON phase.
Key words: reaction bonded; β-SiAlON; liquid sintering; diffuse
