Abstract: This paper reviews the recent research achievements on the low temperature degradation (LTD) behavior of yttria doped tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) and their dental application. It is shown that the three factors affecting the aging phenomenon are the stabilizer type and content, the residual stress and the grain size. Finally, based on the aging mechanisms, some measures to prevent LTD are put forward, and the future application prospects of Y-TZP material in the dentistry are predicted.

Key words: low temperature degradation; dental ceramics; stabilizer; residual stress; grain size
