Abstract: Solid waste refers to the solid and muddy substances discarded by human beings in production and living activities. It is also a solid resource itself, with huge annual output and storage. The unreasonable disposal and utilization will not only cause waste of resources, but also be harmful to human and social environment. Therefore, the utilization of solid waste residues is an important issue for the sustainable development of economy and environment. Bulk solid wastes are usually rich in aluminosilicates, which could be used to make new green building materials. This review was aimed to summarize the technical feasibility and research progress in the preparation of geopolymers from bulk solid wastes (including fly ash, metallurgical slag, slag and construction waste) by using the alkali activation method. The potential application fields of geopolymer materials are also outlined.
