Status and Influence of the Three Masters in Jingdezhen Ceramic Ancient Color Arts

Abstract: In the early 20th century, the ceramic art of Jingdezhen was in the era of “Zhushan Eight Friends”, when famille-rose porcelain was popular and ceramic painting gradually became the mainstream. However, patterned ceramic ancient color art, which is based on patterned decoration, was able to find a new way to create a school of its own. Meanwhile, three outstanding ancient color masters were highlighted, i.e., Duan Maofa, Li Shengchun and Ouyang Guang, known as the “Three Masters of ceramic ancient color art”, which is not easy. They served in art college, ceramic research institutes and art porcelain factories respectively, specializing in teaching, research and creation of ancient color. They regarded the model ofancient color art “Kangxi Five-colors” as the standard, playing an important connecting role in a specific historical period. They are the keepers and inheritors of Jingdezhen ceramic art spirit, with special position and influence in the contemporary Jingdezhen ceramic history.
