Abstract: Alumina - iron oxide - red ultrafine ceramic pigments with Al2O3 as stable phase, Fe2O3 as coloring agent were prepared using aluminum nitrate, ferric nitrate and sucrose as raw materials by solution combustion method and following heat treatment technique. The influence of the ratio of Al3+/Fe3+ (molar ratio) and heat treatment temperature on phase composition, microstructure and chromatic performance of the synthesized pigments were investigated by XRD, SEM and Chroma meter. The results show that the pigments with good coloring performance may be obtained at 1000-1300 ℃. When Al3+/Fe3+ =2, the heat treatment temperature is 1200 ℃ and the soaking time is 30 min, the chromatic values of the synthesized pigment are L*=34.1, a*=25.1 and b*=15.4, respectively, and the particle size is about 120 nm.

Key words: alumina-iron oxide- red pigment; solution combustion method; coloring performance
