Abstract: Effect of whisker orientation on the wear resistance of Al2O3TiB2/SiCw ceramic composite against cemented carbide(YGS)both in air or in N2 atmosphere at temperatures ranging from 200 to 800 has been studied. The wear rate were examined. Results showed that substantial improvement in wear resistance can be obtained when sliding in N2 atmosphere at high temperature. The mechanism responsible for the improvement was determined to be the prevention of oxidation of SiC whiskers. The wear resistance of this composite decreased with decreasing e when sliding in air atmosphere at high temperature, this was found to be caused by the oxidation of SiC whiskers and whisker pullout.

Keywords: SiC whisker, TiB2, ceramic composite, friction and wear, high temperature
