Abstract: A model for designing compositior..al distribution and microstructure of ceramic tool materials with gradient is proposed for the first time in the present paper. By means of simulation of residual thermal stresses in fabricating process as well as thermal stresses, mechanical stresses in working process of cutting tools with different compositional distribution, a mechanism of partially counteracting the stresses resulted from external loads in the interior of an insert is expected to be formed so as to improve wear resistance and fracture resistance of ceramic cutting tools.
