Abstract:Organic Sepiolite clay has been prepared by mechanochemical modification using natural sepiolite from Leping in Jiangxi as raw material and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide as modifier. The orthogonal experimental method is applied for acquiring the best technical parameters, and then BET, XRD, TEM and FT -IR are used to characterize modified sepiolite. Results show: the specific surface area of an optimal modified sample reaches 410m2/g, which is 4.5 times that of crude sepiolite. FIR shows that organic modifier (CTMAB) enters into the sepiolite interlayer, causing the increase of the interlayer spacing, thus increasing the adsorption of sepiolite. Meanwhile, TEM demonstrates that modified sepiotlite is of a loose framework of sparsely-distributed fiber bundles, which maintains the crystal structure and morphology.
