Abstract: Engineering ceramics in the system Si- O- C - N- B manufactured from preceramic silicon containing polymers gain in significance with increas ing availability of advanced precursor materials such as poly(carbos ilane), - (silazane), - (s iloxane) or - (boros ilazane). While high temperature res is tant Si- C and Si- N ceramic fibers are already used to reinforce ceramic matrix compos ites (CMC) in air- and spacecraft s tructures , novel products such as coatings , tapes , foams , and complex shaped components for medium and low temperature applications in the fields of energy, environmental, transportation, and communication technologies become more important in the future. The synthes is of preceramic polymer, properties of polymer derived ceramic, methods of manufacturing and effects on polymer pyrolys is were reviewed.

Keywords: preceramic polymer, ceramics , s ilicon containing polymer, precursor
