Abstract: Cordierite was synthesized using kaolin, talc and magnesia as raw materials. Effect of different raw materials and synthesis temperature was studied on the thermal expansion coefficient of synthetic cordierite. The result shows that the optimum batch for synthesizing cordierite consists of 69% kaolin,22% talc and 9% magnesia, and too much talc, magnesia or kaolin leads to the synthetic cordierite with larger thermal expansion coefficient because of the formation of high expansion crystal phases. Lower expansion cordierite can be synthesized by increasing synthesis temperature appropriately, but too high temperature brings about the opposite result.

Keywords: synthetic cordierite, expansion coefficient, sintering
