Abstract: Gel-casting is an advanced manufacturing technology for ceramic forming, which has provided an effective approach to preparing high performance ceramics in complicated shapes. The acrylamide system, the conventional system for gel-casting, has a disadvantage due to its neurotoxicity and thus its application has been limited. Many recent studies have focused on the non-toxic system for gel-casting technology. In this paper, the types of non-toxic macromolecules for gelcasting, the mechanism, process and latest results of gel-casting were systematically reviewed. With great advantages including environment friendliness, low organic content and green body uniformity, these non-toxic gel systems will become an important developing direction.

Key words: structural ceramics; gel-casting; forming technique; non-toxic gel system
