Abstract: The sintering and microstructure development of magnesia ceramics containing different fluorides in different sintering conditions have been investigated. The experimental results show the addition of MgF2 markedly promoted densification at relatively low temperature and grain growth. It means MgF2 facilitates the sintering of MgO at low temperature. Sintering driving force in the system of MgO- MgF2 is the total interface free energy, which decreases with the decreasing of the total surface of grains.

Key words: fluoride; magnesium oxide; densification; densification; sintering
