Abstract: The insulating brick was prepared with the low grade quartz sand along the Yangtze River, and the effect of ball milling parameter on the grain diameter of low grade quartz sand was studied, which lay a material foundation for fabricating high performance insulating brick. The results show: the grain diameter is decreased with the prolonging of the ball milling time and the increasing of the ball milling speed, but is increased with the increasing of the charge weight of the ball mill and the ratio of large balls to pellets. The optimal powder can be obtained when ball milling for 60 minutes at 300r/min with the charge of 200g/L and the large ball/pellet mass ratio of 0.75.

Key words: quartz sand; ball milling; grain diameter; heat insulating brick
