Abstract: The titanium aluminum carbides materials were reaction synthesized by microwave heat treatment from Ti, Al and graphite powders. Effect of raw materials and Al content on the synthesis of titanium aluminum carbides was studied. The results show that thermal explosion may occur when Ti, Al and graphite powders were heated by microwave at 680 ℃ with the heating rate of 200 ℃/min. The main phases of the products from 3Ti/Al/2C powders were Ti3AlC2 and Ti2AlC. Some amounts of Al3Ti and TiC were obtained. The main phases of the products from 2Ti/Al/C powders were Ti3AlC2 and Ti2AlC. Some amounts of Al3Ti, Ti3AlC and TiC were obtained. Adding appropriate amounts of Al to both raw materials mentioned above may obviously promote the synthesis of titanium aluminum carbides, which can apparently reduce TiC and TiAl phases content in the products. With Al content increased by 0.2 and 0.3 mol, the products were basically composed of Ti3AlC2 and Ti2AlC.
