Abstract: Quartz sand samples from six areas of Hainan were collected in this paper. The chemical composition, whiteness and particle size of these samples were analyzed. Moreover, the effects of different quartz sand materials on the microstructure, sintering properties and mechanical properties of ceramics for the roller were studied. The results show that the quartz sand collected from Shimei Bay has a fine grain size of D70 = 0.24 μm and a lower loss on ignition of 1.88wt.%. The ceramic material used to make the roller has the best flexural strength (126.02 MPa) and good sintering performance with the apparent porosity of 0.4% and the bulk density of 2.84 g/cm3. The performance of the material is attributed to the smaller pore size on the microscopic scale, the effect of the particle extraction mechanism, and the role of the conchoidal and multi-sheet fracture mechanisms. Finally, ceramic roller samples were successfully made using this recipe.

Key words: quartz sand; roller; flexural strength; microstructure; sintering properties
