Abstract: AlON powder was prepared by carbothermal reduction nitridation method with glucose and α-Al2O3 as raw materials at 1700 ℃ for 1 h, and the sintering property of AlON powder was researched. The phase composition, microstructure, pyrolytic characteristics, particle size distribution, impurity content and linear transmittance of the raw materials and the products were characterized by X ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis apparatus, laser particle size analyzer, plasma emission spectrometer and UVVis-NIR spectrophotometer. The results showed that pure AlON powder could be synthesized at ≥ 1700 °C for 1h, and the AlON particles after ball milling had irregular morphology, narrow particle size distribution (d50 ≈ 400 nm) and low impurity element content in the product. The prepared AlON powder had high sintering activity, and the transparent AlON ceramic with the transmittance > 50% was prepared by pressureless sintering at 1850 ℃ for 4 h using the AlON powder as starting material.
