Abstract: Using ferrochrome slag and other natural minerals as raw materials, the reddish brown glaze with high glossiness and better glaze effect was prepared by orthogonal experiments from the reasonably adjusted formula. The influence of the formulation composition and sintering system on the glaze quality of the reddish brow glaze was investigated. A low-cost reddish brown glaze with smooth surface and high glossiness sintered at 1280 °C was developed, and XRD, SEM, EDS and UV-Vis spectrometer were employed to characterize the structure, morphology, and ultraviolet-visible curve of the as-prepared sample. Results showed that the main phase of the as-prepared sample was spinel (Mg1-x,Fex)(Al2-y-φ,Cry, Fe)O4 sized between 100 nm and 500 nm; EDS revealed the elements of Mg, Al, Fe and Cr were contained in the spinel phase. Absorption bands at 460, 665, 690 nm in the visible region of UV-Vis curve were assigned to the 4A2g4T1g , 4A2g4T2g, 4A2g2Eg of Cr3+ and d-d transition of Fe3+ , which led to reddish brown color.
