Abstract: Jun Hong glaze is one of the traditional famous glazes in China, its color effects by a variety of combined factors. In this paper, with the same excess air coefficient, the influences of H2 and CH4 on the coloring of Jun Hong glaze were studied. The chromaticity values of the samples were measured and the internal mechanism of the influence was discussed based on the results of SEM, EDS and XPS analysis. It is proposed that the formation of free atoms and radicals during fuel combustion are the key factors that cause the color change of Jun red glaze. The authors believe that the traditional method cannot reflect the real situation of the influence of combustion atmosphere on the material properties, in which the excess air coefficient is the only indicator to divide the kiln atmosphere. A composite index system includes the kinds and contents of free atoms and radicals should be considering as the indicator for the division of the kiln atmosphere.
