Abstract: The light-weight castables were prepared by aluminum multiple-phase hollow ball, flint clay, flowing beads, alumina powder,α-Al2O3, and aluminate cement. The effect of flowing beads on the properties of the light-weight castables were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the addition of the flowing beads hardly affected the phase composition of the samples. Castables containing 5wt.%~10wt.% flowing beads had higher porosity and lower bulk density while retained equivalent cold strength in contrast with the castables without flowing beads. In the meanwhile, the hot strength and thermal insulation of the castables with 5 wt.%~10 wt.% flowing beads were reinforced.
