Abstract: Hydrothermal method was developed to synthesize AlOOH whiskers using AlCl3·6H2O as the reactants, and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) as the surfactant in the paper. The effects of various processing parameters including the pH value in the solution,the content of SDBS and concentration of AlCl3 on the shape and structure of final product were investigated. The phase composition, microstructure of the final products were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The result showed that pH value greatly influenced the morphology of the final product . The sample consisted of a large number of whiskers with diameter of about 150 nm , length of about 1-2 μm Length-to diameter ratios of 13.3 and good dispersity can be obtained under the condition of pH=3. increased pH values to 5,the whiskers were abourt 160 nm diameter and 1-1.8 μm length, length-to diameter ratios of 11.3. However when the pH values increase to 7-9, not only the diameter and length of whiskers significantly reduced, but also clearly aggregation can be observed in the final product .
